PARTNERS IN FLIGHT

Owl Shack - scops owl Christmas
This is a profile of a cooperative bird conservation effort known as Partners in Flight – a group that is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Partners in Flight is a collaboration that brings bird conservation into our daily lives and more importantly in the actions of industry, agencies, landowners, and others. One of their main themes is “keeping common birds common” since no one wants to see additions made to any state or federal threatened and endangered species list.

Partners in Flight uses bird populations as a barometer for the health of the land like doctors use various medical tests to monitor our bodies’ health. As bird populations decline, that can be a leading indicator of troubles to come for humans. The American Redstart, a migratory species of warbler, is the logo species for Partners in Flight. That bird’s full life cycle covers several countries in the Western Hemisphere from its northern and temperate breeding grounds to its southern and tropical wintering grounds and everything in between during its long migration.

Science has been one of Partners in Flight’s strongest contributions, including its Landbird Conservation Plan and an online database partnership known the Avian Conservation Assessment Database. Their most lasting contribution has been to build partnerships when doing conservation activities with planning and management so that all species of birds, including owls, are included.
