PICK A PATCH FOR BIRDING
Nature enthusiasts are encouraged to contribute their bird sightings to citizen science projects like iNaturalist and eBird. These two platforms have been discussed previously in this blog. Now I’d like to encourage listeners to pick a patch – which is any greenspace you own or that’s nearby where you can frequent in order to birdwatch the heck out of it. If needed, use the Merlin app to help you identify the birds and, if you’re confident in those IDs, submit your sightings to eBird, iNaturalist, or both. Include night visits for owls and other nocturnal critters. To learn more, visit audubon.org/news/explore-habitat-patch.
Repeated visits over a couple of years will give you a much better idea of the birds around you and how the birdlife can change with the seasons. Encourage others to do the same. Pick a patch and go birding. It’s fun, educational, relaxing, and a great excuse to get outdoors. Do it for the owls.
