PLANT A TREE, BUT NOT JUST ANY TREE

When a tree dies in your yard, consider replacing it with a native species that’s site-appropriate. “Native” means indigenous to your area and “site-appropriate” means that it requires the conditions that your yard has – soil type, available sunlight, and so forth. To find out what’s native and what’s not, visit wildflower.org/plants-main. And while you’re at it, get rid of any non-native tree or shrub on your property including pyracanthas, Chinese tallows, Bradford pears, and crepe myrtles and replace them with natives. The birds will thank you for it and you’ll be doing your part to minimize the spread of an invasive plant species native to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Plant a tree but not just any tree – a little research beforehand will go a long way. Do it for the owls.
