TAKE A KID TO YOUR LOCAL LANDFILL AND/OR SEWAGE TREATMENT FACILITY
Yes, these sound like odd field trip locations but this is a classic case of out-of-sight, out-of-mind. When we don’t fully know and appreciate how waste is treated, especially at the landfill, we tend to generate more of it without taking steps to minimize it. You’ll be amazed to see that gigantic pits are dug where trash is dumped and later covered up with dirt hoping that it all decomposes in the next century or two. Believe it or not, some sewage treatment facilities with their settling wetland ponds can be great birdwatching spots for shorebirds, waterfowl, and more. Be sure to get permission before accessing those wetlands. For an example of a sewage treatment facility that’s popular among birdwatchers, please see wttw.com/urbannature/birds-feather-flock-sewage
Take your child, grandchild, or young friends to one or both of these sites nearest you. Discuss how minimizing waste is best for our environment. Flushing our toilet and watching the garbage truck haul off our waste doesn’t mean that because we no longer see it doesn’t mean that it has magically disappeared from our planet. Do it for the owls.
