WHERE DID THAT SPECIES GO?
Hmmm…you haven’t seen a certain species in awhile and you think the worst has happened! Most likely, it’s not due to a disaster but it’s because there’s been a seasonal change or migration is over. We’ve all witnessed the changes in weather and in plants that come with the season. Often, bird movements are tied to that, too. Watch your backyard birds over time and soon you’ll see which ones stay year-round. You’ll see others that merely pass thru during migration versus those that stick around for the just winter months or summer months. The Northern Cardinal and Carolina Chickadee, for instance, are year-round residents in my backyard while Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Baltimore Orioles migrate through. All summer long, my yard hosts Yellow-throated Vireo and Great Crested Flycatchers, yet both depart south in the fall. As winter approaches, we look forward to the arrival of White-throated Sparrows and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. Understanding seasonal abundance in our birdlife can explain why they seem to have gone missing for certain periods of time. On this blog, I’ve repeatedly mentioned widespread declines in many species of birds – this is the case across the board. However, seasonal changes do account for a predictable disappearance of many backyard species, but just wait, you’ll see some familiar faces next year. Learn more about the birds that surround you. Do it for the owls.
